SezWho Says Sayonara
I have removed SezWho and reactivated 4Avatars, although I still believe that Entrecard’s partnership with a comments platform has tremendous potential. It is an invaluable service for new blogs that need to pull out all the stops to attract both traffic and comments, but I don’t think it’s right for Reward Rebel.
Curiously, there don’t appear to be as many MyBlogLog avatars as I recall prior to SezWho being activated. Could this be nostalgia playing tricks on my senses? LOL!
I’m delighted to have also installed the plugin Wordpress Thread Comment, so that comments and their replies are aligned for easy perusal. Sometimes I’d edit the date and/or time of my response to a comment, so that there was a clear flow to the conversations, although I didn’t like creating inaccuracies, and now I won’t have to!
While you’re here, take a look at Reward Rebel’s favourite plugins.

I also removed SezWho from all of my blogs. It was causing them to load slowly and would not validate code-wise. No one ever rated anything, so it was useless as far as I could see.
I’ve tried the threaded comment plug-in, too and it doesn’t work as I envision a threaded comment system to work, so I’ve inactivated it as well. No sense having code running that doesn’t do what you think it ought to.
I hope you have better luck with it than I did.

Aaarrgghh, I could scream. Just went to respond to your comment by using the ‘reply’ button of WP Thread Comment, and realized RR’s comment box was the entire width of the web page, so I’ve deactivated it before I’ve even used it! I’ll have to check it out later when I can bear to scrutinize it. Nothing ever just ‘plugs in’!!!!!
Same prob here with very few people rating anything, in fact, it was such an extraordinary event, I’d raise the flag and strike up the band!

Yeah, they can be horribly frustrating! Of course nearly everything to do with computers can (and is) that way.
Back to the drawing board….
Are you going to let the plug-in developer know about your issue? I never contacted him about my dissatisfaction with it.
I expected the plugin to put the replies to replies under the reply and replies to post in line..sort of a staggered tree, but everything just stayed in line — other than giving you the option of choosing to reply to post or reply to reply, I couldn’t see that it really did anything. A real downer for me.

Infuriatingly, it worked perfectly when I tested it out on another blog of mine, which hasn’t yet gone ‘public’. I tested it by leaving mock comments - both as comments on posts and as replies to comments on posts - and it worked a treat, and everything lined up as you yourself describe expecting it to. Based on these results, I went ahead and installed it on RR, and the rest, as they say, is history!
To be honest, it hadn’t occurred to me to notify the developer. I’ll take a fresh look at it tomorrow, see what’s what, and take it from there.

Oddly, I’d not considered that, but then I guess it’s always a mistake to say anything in a comment one place that you wouldn’t want read elsewhere!

it’s because of the multi-lingual comments that I write, which may be understandable by a certain group, and not to some.

I installed SezWho on my site only to realize that its ugly little logo was replacing MyBlogLog avatars in the comments & showing up at the top of every post. It looked horrible and I was less than impressed by their website & the information found there. I didn’t have time to fool around with figuring out how to customize the plugin, so just removed it. I’m glad to read your comments as they confirm that I probably wasn’t missing anything, anyway. At first, I saw that little logo on a lot of sites, but they seem to be disappearing quickly.

When I first installed SezWho on this site, I didn’t like all the stars and Rate This all over the place. By the time I’d edited out all the bits I didn’t like, there was only Rate Comment left, and no-one ever did! I wasn’t too pleased with the way it screwed up the avatar setup either. All in all it was a waste of time on here!

It may just be that it can’t process a well-established blog that has lots of comments (not that I can lay claim to that last, but I do have a lot of posts).
Oh — you have a pressie over at eyespi — did you see it???

Well, I’ve reactivated it and everything is working right and lining up properly, it’s just when the commenter replies to a comment that the comment box is too wide for the blog template.
I’m well chuffed with my award, and have left a comment on the post itself.

*sigh* I was never able to install SezWho as I kept getting a ‘fatal error’ message each time I hit ‘activate’ I would’ve liked to have it but what are you going to do?
I like the idea of having a ‘plugins’ page… mind if I yoink the idea?

I know how you feel… you get all excited about a new gadget for yer site(s) and it works fine for 99.9% of the blogosphere, and guess what? you’re in the 0.1% it don’t wanna work with! Yep, been there, oooh, how I’ve been there!
And you’re more than welcome to ‘yoink’ away!
I’d better update mine, I suppose, I meant to do it before I published this post, but, er, well um, I musta got distracted, wow, that’s unusual! Double

lol Apparently I got spared because I’ve heard nothing but bad on the whole SezWho issue. Though it makes me sad because there were such good intentions behind the whole thing. Oh well, though… thanks for the permission to yoink
I also LOVE the link to Theme Test Drive author site. That site has a LOT of great treasures. Don’t worry about getting distracted, happens to everyone!!

Some plugins really are trials and mistakes… I wanted to look into threaded comments as well. They could encourage discussions.

I love that my response to a comment is aligned with it. Things haven’t yet gotten any more complex than that, so it’s early days! I now want to colour co-ordinate the comment boxes, cos I do like to put my own mark on stuff. Control freak, I think it’s called!

Hey Laney, I just realised something.. your clicking on your entrecard from my inbox always brings me to this page: http://rewardrebel.com/blog/online-business-marketing-offline/ instead of your main page. Was that intentional?

Hi Layne,
I installed SezWho on top of YATCP (Yet Another Threaded Comments Plugin) and YATCP continued working, BUT… I had to hack a little YATCP code in order to get Avatars and other stuff showing up and correctly aligned (not so little indeed, it took me a few hours of trial and error).
There’s a couple of ways you can go around SezWho slowdown issue. I followed Turnip’s advice on http://turnipofpower.com/2008/07/19/sezwho-got-your-site-down/ and managed to setup my blog to load a local copy of SezWho CSS and images instead of default procedure which is to retrieve them from their site.
Now if my blog is loading slowly is because Revresponse Ads, and other widgets, but I’ll put all of them on Iframes ASAP in order to speed up site’s load time.
Re: removing SezWho.. well… after all the work to customize the comments stuff, I’d say that unless that rating stars become hungry aliens who start to eat my blog… No way!

Layne,
I was once thinking of installing Sezwho but after observing its look and feel in other blogs, I’ve decided not to. Like you, I opted for the usual plugin (the Wordpress Thread Comment) because I really think it is better in encouraging readers to post comments because they have the ability to reply to any comment previously posted.
