Flagrant Waste Of The Planet’s Resources
This little lot was delivered to me this morning, and at one time I’d have thought, “wow, what brilliantly tantalizing marketing”, but today I’m just furious.

To flagrantly waste the planet’s resources like this, just for a marketing ploy, should be criminalised. It highlights an aspect of internet marketing that is often overlooked – the savings on materials that would otherwise be used to notify prospective customers of new products and services via direct mailings.
Everything in the picture above served to advise me of the information on the business card, and the ‘fortune’ bears the website address being promoted, which is why I’ve blanked it out. That’s it.
This is a typical example of unethical marketing — the promoter has given no consideration to the wider impact of his actions, and this cannot be allowed to continue, if the planet is to survive.
All the package achieved is to convince me to unsubscribe from this particular marketer’s mailing list.
How do you feel about this type of marketing and its drain on the planet’s wealth?

Reward Rebel,
I say, shred them together with the marketers who sent it, then scatter their finely chopped remains in the sea. This way, they may at least provide some benefits for the environment they so blatantly abuse. –Durano, done!

Extreme Durano!
All the waste is frustrating, isn’t it? Why can’t people see that nothing whatsoever is more important than the planet itself. No planet, no human life. End of.

I wonder how much it costs for the guy to put one of those together. I’m glad you unsubscribed from his mailing list.

This type of marketing isn’t cheap, especially when you factor in the quantity being mailed out. Just goes to show how much money is being made, but how much is it costing the planet? All the money in the world won’t do the marketer much good, when the planet gives up and dies;-(

If you think that’s bad, check out my (very old) post (http://www.fragileheart.com/journal/2005/10/03/giggle-of-the-year/) about how Apple ships their ‘Apple Care’ package!!

Hiya fragileheart ~
Read your article… crazy isn’t it? Amazon use massive great boxes just to send out tiny items. No-one will do what’s required until the government legislates on commercial packaging. BTW I left a comment on your site, but forgot to say that I hope your Dad’s OK.

I hate shit like that

One reason I am glad I’m not receiving any mail (or at least not much) to our APO address

It looks like the USA is finally going to start a “do not mail” list. I always thought it was ironic that an email spammer can get years in prison, but a junk mail spammer nothing.

Hi Nicole,
Well, that’s succinct! You’re well out of it, girlfriend;-D

Hey Stephan,
Does the USA also have a telephone preference list so people can avoid receiving sales calls?
I guess that one good thing about the British obsession with being polite is that we like to have formal protocols for dealing with every possible contingency in life. If we didn’t, when anyone phones us to sell something, we’d have to buy it, or they might think we’re being rude;-)

Well…I disagree. I don’t find that sort of thing annoying because it supposedly “wastes resources” on our so called “dying planet” (because I think that’s a load of tripe and the idea of criminalizing someone for “wasting” resources shows your own mindset, which scares the crap out of me) but I do find it frustrating because it’s spam in real life. Just like I hate spam in my e-mail…I hate spam in my mail box.
Yes, it is a waste of money to you - but if it works to get others to their site then it is not a waste of money for them. I send out promotional materials to my customers - pens, magnets, mirrors, etc. and find that most love them. They are useful and pretty. I do not send out promos like the above just to random people and never to my customers without an actual order. That would be a waste.
I just hate getting spam mail at home. Mostly credit card applications.
It’s not just a matter of waste but of personal information security. At least your fortune cookie didn’t have personal details included.
Did you eat the cookie?

Hiya Castocreations,
I’ll respond to the easiest bit first… nope, I didn’t eat the cookie!
Perhaps you’ve taken my remark about criminalization a little too literally, however, the earth’s resources are not infinite, and it’s not tripe to consider effective management before they’re entirely depleted. It’s because the planet’s decline has been neglected for too long that it’s escalating at such a frightening pace, and we’re confronted by such an uphill task to turn back the tidal wave of pollution, extinction, imbalance and lack of harmony.
If you really think I’m some kind of eco-nazi, and fear my mindset, how would you feel about having governments introduce and enforce legislation, as a final resort to save the planet, because people refuse to police their own activities?
My ultimate point regarding the promotional mailing I received is that the information could’ve been imparted by a more economical and environmentally friendly method.
Thanks for taking the time to put your perspective — it certainly enlivens the discussion when someone completely disagrees with me;-D
