Entrecard Jugglers
On occasion, an Entrecard-enabled website applies to advertise on Reward Rebel, and when I check it out, decide to submit my own ad request. Of course, the danger lies in the timing – I need to make certain that the ads don’t coincide and display on the same date! Ouch! How come I witness this undesirable synchronicity so frequently? I can’t figure out how or why it happens, when it’s avoidable.
The Entrecard system isn’t ideal for planning a consistent schedule of ads, but there is some guidance, and once an ad is approved, the date of display is advised. If a person monitors their advertising schedule, they’ll see there’s an overlap. Why do they allow it to proceed? Why not contact the blog, and cancel the ad? They can resubmit it — what’s the deal?
Is it simply because people don’t monitor their advertising schedules? Are there people who are just unaware that this is happening? It seems odd to me that a person would pay to advertise, and not keep an eye on developments.
Before I submit an ad, I usually check the estimated date of display, but last night I was so delighted at securing a spot on the highly popular website, Android’s Dungeon, that I slipped up!
Android’s Dungeon already had an ad scheduled on Reward Rebel, and I was aware its display date could be a close call, but went ahead all the same. I also sent a message explaining that we needed to avoid the ads coinciding on 26th March.
The need to avoid displaying an ad on a particular date has arisen on a number of occasions recently and, to my knowledge, there is no direct method to alter the scheduling of Entrecard ads. However, by manipulating the ‘Ad Queue’ and ‘Approvals’ we can exert a little bit of influence over scheduling – a teeny weeny little bit, but enough to avoid any wasted advertising!
When I need to manipulate the display date of an ad, I simply postpone its approval, and inform the advertiser that their ad has been approved in principle, and that I’ll advise the display date asap.
Unfortunately, I had to cancel the ad on Android’s Dungeon, but I sent a note expressing my apologies and regret, as well as my desire to advertise at a future date. A speedy response assured me that I was forgiven, and welcome to advertise another time.
Communications are so important, and good communications can be the difference between success and failure. I believe in reaching out, after all, people don’t bite (not over the internet, they don’t anyway)! There is an element online who use its automated functionality to avoid personal, individual communication. Big mistake.
But that’s a different topic, which I think I’ll leave for another article!

you need to explain why this matters at all. if I get it correctly, you mean you despise having your ad run on a site that is advertised on your site, i.e., you have their card on your widget and they have yours on theirs. what difference does it make? other than to widget surfers who run into a “dead end” and, oh, gee, must go back to Categories or whatever and begin again. so?

Lighten up Otilius,
Before commenting so aggressively, perhaps you should re-read the content, because I haven’t said I ‘despise’ anything.
Why the contempt for speed dropping? The majority of traffic generated by Entrecard is from speed droppers, there’s nothing wrong with this, anyone who has the time to ‘read’ 300 blogs a day doesn’t have a life.
I do have a life, and so I speed drop Entrecards, but I don’t speed drop all the time. When a site’s content attracts my interest, I’ll spend some time reading it and, if appropriate, comment. Then surf on until the content on another site catches my attention.
Crazy lil ol’ me;-D

Hi,
I was going to ask the same question as otilius. I don’t really see a problem on that situation, but if there is, I’d like to know. Every tiny bit of optimization is always welcome.

Anthony

Hello Anthony,
I don’t know that it’s a problem for sure, but spending 4-500 credits per ad, I’d prefer to avoid any situation that disrupts the smooth surf;-D

Yes, I agree with you when it refers to people who go chain-dropping. In my case I prefer to reciprocate to people who’s already in my inbox as I don’t have time to drop a lot of cards daily.
Anyway, I think your point is strong enough to at least be tested somehow.

Anthony

gee, whizz, no aggression in my comment, RR. I guess you are a bit defensive over nothing. I guess if you had a point and could explain it, that might be different, but, whatever, “attack the man”, a basic logical fallacy. you Know-it-Alls always crack me up.
when I wink, it doesn’t mean “f-you”, you know? give me a break!

Hey again Anthony,
I too work from my Inbox, but if there’s enough leeway between the number of cards I’ve received and the limit of 300, and I’ve enough time, I’ll surf on from reciprocating a drop, if you see what I mean;-S
I can’t say for certain that synchronised ads will detract from the number of drops received on either site, but I’d prefer not to do anything unnecessary that isn’t an optimization, and think there’s a distinct possibility of losing out on drops by showing ads at the same time. I could be wrong, however, and am always eager to learn;-)

Otilius,
Have you ever considered smoking d***? It might chill you out a bit.

I see why you would want to allow the chain droppers to keep going, but I would think that simultaneous advertising on 2 sites could be advantageous. If the chain dropper comes to a dead end, they may just stick around on your site for more than 5 seconds.

Hi Reward Rebel,
Goodness, that exchange with Otilius is getting nasty, like Hillary and Obama.
Frankly, I have advertised on only a couple of sites and I do monitor these (not that it’s difficult), and when I see a widget cued in on my dashboard wanting to advertise, and I know I have a pending request on that site, I hold the request.
My feeling is it will bounce back and break momentum. I am not certain if a break in such momentum is good or bad but I could find it irritating if I were in their shoes. It may be a big deal, or maybe not, but to me it’s like something I would compare to tripping a friend. :-)–Durano, done!

It looks like what I was going to say has already been said. I’m guilty as charged - as someone who works strictly from the inbox (who has time for 300?!), it would never occur to me to try to work my ad schedule.
In closing, I must regretfully inform you that I’m not only smoking my allotted share of d***, but Otilius’ as well. Sorry about that …

Hi BCarter,
Good point, and not one I’d considered! But I imagine that it’d only work if the content warranted the perusal;-)

Holy shit Canucklehead, you don’t have time to check your ads schedule, cos you’re too dang busy smoking d***. Now I totally understand — heh heh heh.
Yep, I work from my Inbox too, but if I’ve the time and inclination, I’ll sometimes surf on from a drop til I hit a dead end.
Thanks for making me giggle;-)

Great post and good “future” thinking.
I applied for advertising on a site not in my group - and one in which they express not approving most ads that are unrelated sites. I decided to take my chance and email the owner … this morning, my ad was approved. Communication.. I’m figuring if I hadn’t emailed them, they probably would have denied my site.

Hiya Judi,
Yep, I’m a firm believer in communications, and I get in touch with website owners to inform them when I’ve submitted an ad request, to advise the date of display for an ad request submitted to me, to say thanks for clicks thru generated by an ad displayed.
Basically I make contact when some transaction has taken place, just as you do in business offline.
Best of luck to you

It’s so nice of you, actually. This is how I treat other Entrecard members as my “friends”. Just by communicating with a few messages, I can feel their support and their passion to communicate or the eagerness to have a relationship with other bloggers.
Whether they treat you back as their own friend too, is a different matter
