Comments Curiosity

April 24th, 2008

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Reward Rebel logo miniI’ve encountered quite a few blogs that enthusiastically invite readers to comment, and when a readers does, their contribution isn’t acknowledged or responded to.

On one occasion, the blog author actually asked his readers what it was he was doing wrong, and why people weren’t leaving comments on his site!

Witnessing a lively discussion taking place on a website encourages readers to get involved, a blog author who doesn’t engage in the discussion does the opposite, and discourages participation.

I find this lack of communication difficult to comprehend, but that’s probably because I’m a control freak for whom it’s impossible to ignore a comment — I have to have the final word!

Do you treat comments to your own site like you’d treat a real-life discussion? Do you respond? Or perhaps your site receives comments in such high numbers, it’s impossible to respond to each of them?

Do you expect a response when you’re the one commenting?

How often would any of us engage in comments and responses, if we didn’t all need back-links to our own sites?

Reward Rebel

I am trying to increase my rate of commenting on the blogs of others when I see something interesting or really do have something good to say about the topic posted on a blog. Don’t really want to comment for the sake of commenting (you know what I mean).

So I believe I am like many other bloggers who appreciate people leaving their thoughts on the topics that I’ve raised on my blog which induces interesting insights and viewpoints to the topic. I also try to reply to those comments posted on my blog through the same channel, so we have a conversation going on.

The blogosphere is meant for conversation and not just static provision of information, so I believe commenting is the most important factor in blogosphere that makes it so unique. :)

I try to respond to comments on my site as often as I can, but if I just get a legit “Way To Go” comment that is from someone trying to keep me going, then I tend to not respond.

    Hi Jasmine Shanea,

I think you’re right that most bloggers enjoy engaging in the blog conversation, and that interaction is what it’s all about.

Some people still don’t get it, tho!

    —————————–

    Hey BCarter,

Yeah, the ‘way to go’ type of comment gets through on my sites if I know the commenter, but if not, it’s a no go as I’m not slaving away to build other people’s links for them! I’m not exactly stingey with link love (I hope not, anyway).

  4. 4Avatars Durano Lawayan on April 25, 2008 8:42 am

    Hi Reward Rebel,

For me, it’s a matter of courtesy. If someone makes a comment on a post I published, I respond to each one as fast as possible. I like a discussion going on between me and the readers.

Also, as a matter of reciprocity, I go over to the commenters site and post a comment on his/her post published for the day or a comment on several posts on the page if these are related.

On visiting their site, if I find their themes and styles or posts interesting, I blogroll these sites and fave them on Technorati too, without asking for an exchange of links. Then I return to their site on my own and post a comment as regularly as I can. My blogroll lists sites I visit at least twice a week, others almost daily.

Comments that are cliched’ like what B. Carter says, I tend to acknowledge but still make a reciprocal visit.
In terms of expecting a response, I at least expect an acknowledgement, but I don’t really return the very next day to seek it out. I take a glance on my next scheduled stop.

Where you’re concerned, I visit and read your posts daily even if I don’t comment all the time, at least I drop a card.:-) Besides, there are certain sites which are truly interesting and others where the author’s personality just oozes out so charmingly. Like you. :-)
These are always a pleasure to visit. :-) –Durano, done!

    Dearest Durano,

Your generosity to people and their websites amazes me, and yet it doesn’t really surprise me.

You’ve always been very generous with your time to RR by way of comments and input, and I’ve always felt privileged, because I have great respect for your intellect and what I know of your principles and ethics.

You have been a loyal reader and commenter since way back and, by way of reciprocating, I’d like to comment on your blog more often, but sometimes feel I know too little (or nothing) about the topic under discussion. Your posts are so intelligent and articulate, I have to confess, sometimes I don’t feel equal to the task. There’s my low self-esteem for you!

  6. 4Avatars Sherxr on April 25, 2008 9:03 am

Ah!! Found two of my regular commentators here! Hm..
Right comments comments.. I’ve seen a lot of sites writing about this recently. IT’s the IN thing in blogosphere (Sic).
I cannot make my point more clearly in all the comment box I left this message in.. please reply to a comment when someone bothers to read the entire post (if not half), scroll down the post to look for the word “Comments” and click on it.. wait for comment box to appear, then insert theirs.. it’s a lot of effort! And the person leaving the comment.. could be requesting for link exchange sometimes ..just wanted to catch your attention.
It’s courtesy to respond daily if not frequently..
Let’s see how you fare on this ;)

    P.S. I’ll re-read your comment and come back… promise! ;-)

  8. 4Avatars Diane Scott on April 25, 2008 10:09 am

I love responding to those that have taken the time to read and reply! I actually get a real kick from it. I just wish that readers understood that apart from the responding, they can be laying some serious groundwork for themselves.

When you comment more often than not you get to leave your own website link. On top of that, if you reply based on the conversation, you get to do a bit of personal name branding for yourself.

    And… it’s all free :)

Why wouldn’t you take the time to use blog resources effectively?

I do believe though that I will take a page from your book and start posing questions at the end of our posts. Maybe it’s easier for others to answer questions versus just commenting?

    What do you think? ;)

Nothing irks me more in the blog world then an owner that does not respond.

I reply to ALL as soon as I can. I also check my spam filter as often as possible for those legit comments that sometimes get caught.

If there are LOT of comments on a particular post, then simply wait a few and answer 4-5 in one comment, but do not ignore them.

As for the “great post!” comments as referred to above, 9 outa 10 will get deleted in moderation…I offer a lot of link love to legit commenter’s and I’m not going to be gamed by spammers.

    Hiya Dennis,

Why am I not surprised that it bugs you! You’re a really speedy responder to comments… I know!

And I’m with you on the ‘way to go’ type of comment, it’s one thing if I know the commenter, but I delete those that are hitching a ride! Not on my back they don’t!

  12. 4Avatars Daisy the Curly Cat on April 25, 2008 5:55 pm

I do not usually respond to comments unless there is a specific question. I am a little bit bad. But I do try my best to visit the blogs of those who leave a comment for me, and I will very often leave a comment, too.

  14. 4Avatars Shelia on April 25, 2008 6:22 pm

You’ve got it right on all fronts. Our blogs are basically us in a one-way conversation on issues that we want to have a say on. By virtue of our putting it in blog form we invite others to share in this conversation, and when they do, we ought to respond. It’s part of my joy in having a blog. I particularly love new voices on my blog, they spice up the conversation.

    Hi Sheila,

I particularly like it when the comments start being about not just the content of the post, but the content of the prior comments, too. That’s when you’ve really nailed it! ;-)

  16. 4Avatars iris on April 25, 2008 9:04 pm

I delete the comments that are spam, i visit the sites of those who commented in my site and comment in their site (I usually scroll down and take time in the site an look if their is topic that i like to read and then leave a comment) if not i will not, i sometimes leave the comments for a while then comment back in one go, especially if their is something that needs my response or questions.

And also, if i leave a comment i subscribe through email because i want to know what is the response i get after i left my comment.

I love reading comments, i love to know what the other people think and i always try to respond to be part of the conversation if their is (If it’s purely comment that don’t need respond, then i just leave it as it is).

  17. 4Avatars RewardRebel on April 25, 2008 10:04 pm

    Hello Iris,

Occasionally, I’ve left a ‘thanks to all’ in response to a lot of comments, e.g. School Days ID Parade Contest - people left some great remarks accompanying their contest entry, but it just didn’t make sense to try and respond to 80 plus comments individually!

Sometimes I subscribe to follow-up comments by email, but because I receive so many emails every day, I don’t do that too often. ;-)

    Yo Fool,

I can’t always respond as soon as I’d like, but so that the flow of comments and responses makes sense (comment - response, comment - response, etc), I’ve started editing the time of my response.

I don’t know if anyone else does this, or if it’s frowned upon for any reason - I do hope not - but it wouldn’t be my first screw-up (and doubt it’ll be my last)!

    Hiya Diane,

It’s definitely one to keep in mind. :-)

  22. 4Avatars Zhu on April 26, 2008 12:01 am

I personally value comments because I feel my blog is about life, and life is all about discussing, exchanging etc. Probably wouldn’t feel the same if I had a tutorial blog or similar.

Anyway, I try to reply to all comments. I say try because I tend to leave old posts alone… if someone posts a comment on something older than a few months, unless it’s a question, I’ll prob. leave it alone. That said, I’d visit the commenter website/ blog.

I hate when I keep on commenting on a blog and there’s no follow-up. It sometimes takes me a couple of days (at most) to reply to all but I do it. I simply stop commenting on blogs where the owner doesn’t follow up. What’s the point?

  23. 4Avatars RewardRebel on April 26, 2008 8:16 am

    Hey Zhu,

Your blog’s content covers quite a wide spectrum, plus the photos you display - I’ve always been impressed by how you manage your comment responses.

I agree that the ‘personal perspective’ blog functions differently than a ‘how to’. When a site has a foot in more than one camp, and/or receives a lot of comments, it must get a bit tricky deciding how best to organise their acknowledgement and/or responses.

When I encounter that circumstance, I’ll have to outsource some tasks, to free-up time to deal with the things that I’d prefer to retain the personal touch (like reading/responding to comments). :-)

  24. 4Avatars Dennis Edell on April 26, 2008 9:02 am

Reward Rebel - Thanks for the compliment! I do try to respond as quickly as possible…which stems from my email addiction and downloading it every 30 minutes or so LOL.

Sorry to say though, you struck another cord with your lack of subscribing to comments; shame on you! :-)

This is right in there with the “community” feeling. Just as we all like (and expect) the owner to reply to our comments, we should all reply to replies IF it’s warranted.

Speaking for myself, I try as I can to respond to comments in a manner that keeps things flowing…hoping to not just get the original commenter back, but others as well.

If you (general you, not YOU specifically) don’t reply to my reply, it not only looks bad to the blog owner, but to future readers as well…..remember them? The ones that may or may not click through on your link, depending on how you come off to them. ;)

Quite frankly, I may not comment at all on a blog that dos not have someway to sub to comments (plugin or RSS)…I KNOW I’m not just going to “remember” to return and it generally makes me feel like a one-off comment spammer. Hate that feeling.

Also folks, it really is NOT difficult to respond to a LOT of comments. You don’t HAVE to respond to each individually - comment-response, comment-response.

If you’re LUCKY ENOUGH to have 40 50 60 90 comments on a post, there is no harm in letting it flow a bit between commenter’s…then jump in every 4th 5th or 6th and respond to multiple in one response; we’ve all seen it….

    @Dave
    @Bill
    @Alice
    @Dan

    etc etc.

Know what I mean? Btw, this method also get some to scroll up and re-read past comments ;)

When thanking you for the compliment, I meant to add something.

I actually apologised twice recently to commenter’s for replies that were way late for different reasons.

Once I was in the hospital for 8 days (that was a general apology to all) and the second time, one commenter had 4 (legit) comments get caught in my spam filter…I didn’t notice for about a week.

Tell ya what people…they were appreciative of the apologies. What does this tell us…

Commenter’s DO notice, when they are “ignored” whether purposely or by accident.

Heh, heh, heh, Dennis, are you trying to wind me up?

I too check my SPAM whenever I check comments, and have sometimes been surprised at the commenters who’ve been stranded there - can’t always figure it out (overall, tho, Akismet’s pretty good).

Re the omission of an email alternative to RSS feed, quite frankly, that was down to the fact I’m still a bit green about many peripheral technologies, and am still learning what the reader expects to be in place as a matter of course.

Perhaps you could clarify something for me regarding email notification and RSS. I can see the benefit to the reader of RSS and email notification, but is there any benefit to the blog or blogger? If you provide a full version of a new post, the reader doesn’t need to visit your site, so isn’t that undesirable?

I’ve assumed it’s a case of the technology exists, so the blogger provides it as a courtesy to their readers, but I can’t see any direct benefit.

Having said that, I do want to add ‘Email Sub to Comments’ option, but I’ve ended up with two accounts at Feedburner, and am in bit of muddle with it all, and my brain hurts and once again you’ve virtually booted me up the bum, and I’ve gone and dunnit!

I’ve had to learn so much in recent months, that sometimes my head feels not so much like it’s going to explode, but that it’s been nuked!

  29. 4Avatars RewardRebel on April 26, 2008 9:52 am

You’re bang on, Dennis, about people appreciating the little courtesies.

I’ve been up to my eyes recently, and haven’t been participating in Entrecard activities as much I was. However, aside from the last week or so, whenever I submitted an ad request, I’d also send a message to the blog author, to break the ice and, as and when time allows, I’d advise the clicks thru from the ad after it finished displaying.

From the tone of many responses I’ve received to these little communiqués, it’s apparent that people really appreciate the thought, and being treated like an individual instead of the next item on the conveyor belt.

I know for sure that there were ads that wouldn’t have been approved, had I just submitted the request, and remained an unknown entity.

So there you have it — proof that communications can mean the difference between success and failure! ;-)

  30. 4Avatars Sherxr on April 26, 2008 10:02 am

Oh all right where was I? You fare pretty well on the speed of comment responding!! *Applause*

I was just trying to say that leaving comments takes two to three minutes effort. Not as easy as it seems. First read the post. Second scroll down the post to look for “comments”. Third click and wait for comment box to appear. Fourth check that you are not leaving duplicates. Fifth, fill in all the boxes for name, email, etc.. sometimes even spam guard.. have to decipher the letters. Sixth, fill in comments. Try not to sound stupid (like me now). Seventh, press “Submit Comment” and wait for comments to appear….

Of course the last step is visit the blog to check for replies. And if there are none, I can’t be bothered to return to comment. :P Bad habit of mine!

    Sherxr’s last blog post..Lexan containers..are they safe?

  31. 4Avatars RewardRebel on April 26, 2008 10:32 am

    Thanks for returning, Sherxr!

Yep, I thought I’d grasped what you were saying, but wasn’t sure!

You’re absolutely right, of course, it doesn’t take a great deal of effort to scroll down and leave a comment, although I have to confess to having come across several sites on which I simply couldn’t figure out how to access the comment form!

Also, I’ve encountered quite a few Blogspot blogs that have their comments set up incorrectly, so that only people who also have a Blogger ID can contribute. When this occurs, I always get in touch to let them know that I wanted to comment, but couldn’t and if they let me know if/when they amend the settings, I’ll come back.

What I find odd about this situation is:

    (a) Doesn’t the blogger check the comments function is set up right? (This isn’t always newbie bloggers.)

    (b) Do other people find they can’t comment and just leave the site? Period.

I always try to notify the owner when something on their website isn’t functioning properly, and I believe my halo should arrive in the mail any day now!

  32. 4Avatars Carol on April 26, 2008 11:04 am

You are right about the comments. I have been guilty of not responding back with comments and I am sorry, I will do better I promise. I do appreciate my comments and I do make comments on other sites. I have not really expected an answer back unless I ask a question about something and then I would appreciate an aknowledgement that I took the time to place a comment on their site. So yeah I hear where you are coming from.

Dang Rebel, I think you need the “threaded comments” plugin LOL.

First off, you already have “email sub to comments” with the check box plugin you’re using. Good job.

“Perhaps you could clarify something for me regarding email notification and RSS.”

I’d be VERY happy too! Reason being, I just recently went FULL FEED myself.
http://www.directsaleswebmarketing.com/we-are-officially-a-full-feed-rss-but-the-blogs-look-will-change/ - look at the post date :-)

Yes, the MAIN reason is the fact of courtesy, but if the content is what it should be the reader WILL click though to comment or see what else ya got. Fact.

You can also add “Feed Flare” options within Feedburner to add links to the bottom of every post - different bookmarks and such, plus a comments link that also shows how many comments you do or don’t have on that post already…..with this link, they don’t have to scroll back up to click the original link.

You can also advertise right in the feed, just don’t over do it. If you have a decent amount of readers, you can also sell advertising in your feed, again don’t over do it.

Most selling the ad will do it for only 5-10$ per month (per week if your sub count is better), not much but what do you care as it takes seconds to add a line or 2. :)

I felt exactly as you do, “Don’t I want to tease them into clicking through? Maybe I can also get an adsense or affiliate click from it too…”

Yep, and 9 outa 10 know that’s why and consider it insulting as well as annoying.

I read all over the net about the how’s and whys of going full feed. The last straw for me was personal feedback from more then one reader; the final one being…

“I subscribed for your great content. I unsubscribed after the FIRST half feed, sorry”

    Ouch. Point taken.

You’re quite right in pointing out “flaws” to blog owners ;)

I’m still learning myself, but I do know a little about a little regarding Feedburner; feel free to contact me anytime :)

They also have a help group (after closing their forum)…I got useless help for the one question I asked so far, but the place is packed. That may be a good sign.

    Thanks Backlink Builder,

I think we’re all pretty much in agreement about the ‘could hardly be bothered’ type of comment - and yet I’m surprised how often I see ‘em!

I encourage my readers to comment by having a competition based on commenting, and I always respond to a comment that has been left.

    Hey Grateful Guy,

I’ve noticed more people are using rewards to encourage comments, and I’ve considered doing something similar to persuade more Technorati Faving and Stumbling. ;-)

@backlink - I have no issue with those comments as 9outa10 get deleted :-)

There is really only one way I let those through…if I already know the person to be a decent commenter and maybe he/she just got lazy one day.

In this case I may even respond with some fun sarcasm…this almost ensure a return comment which gets the ball rolling anyway ;)

That’s my free tip for the day lol.

Tread lightly while “encouraging” stumbles. It is my understanding that the powers that be over there tend to get irked by this.

I am amazed at the lack as well. I see so many u comment, I follow stuff on sites, and have left a variety of comments on a variety of sites, and so often times they go left ignored.. whats the participation factor all about if you don’t interact.

I try and visit each site that the owner has left a comment on mine. I always thank them, and try to find a post or information to comment on their site.

    Hey Dennis,

Yeah, too important to mess with before careful consideration! ;-)

  52. 4Avatars RewardRebel on April 28, 2008 8:22 pm

    Hey Susie,

I always visit the sites who leave a comment, but have to confess I don’t always leave a comment in return - immediately. If I don’t have anything to say, I can’t force it. But whenever and wherever possible, I try to reciprocate. :-)

  53. 4Avatars Ramona Iftode on April 29, 2008 4:44 am

Well, I think I am the nasty one who doesn’t respond too fast. When I have a small blog as mine is, I tend to be very responsive since the comment rate is small. On the other blog I own I got some more comments (tens of them sometimes on a post) and that meant I wasn’t able to respond to all of them. In the end I do have a lot of work to do as a designer and spending too much time replying would mean wasting time from creating sites for the paying clients. Sometimes this “meanness” is just lack of time ;)

    Welcome ‘nasty’ Ramona,

Hey, I’m only kidding! You’re not at all nasty or mean, and I completely understand what you’re saying, and why you handle your sites’ comments as described.

I’m not a blogger per se, but blog as part of the internet marketing bigger picture. When I started the Reward Rebel blog (RR has other branches) it was with the intention of using it as a learning project — a role it is fulfilling admirably! Thing is, I got bushwhacked by the beautiful people I’ve encountered in the process!

I’ve been surprised by the number of respondents to this post who manage their comments on an ad hoc basis. Although I try to acknowledge comments as soon as possible, I try to work to a daily plan, otherwise my focus would be constantly broken while I was checking my emails and new comments.

Of course, a purely personal blog that isn’t also part of a business can be managed however its owner wants. Lucky bloggers!

I try to write posts that will want people to reply, but it rarely happens. I have decided I just have to pump content out, which that is a bit hard now. I used to be active at coComment, which brought me tons of hits. Between posts, and coCo i got a lot of comments.

    Hi there, Ryan,

Thanks for the introduction to CoComment which I’d not previously heard of. I’ve had a quick look at what they offer, and think such setups are useful for starting the ball rolling with new sites/blogs.

To improve the number of comments your blog’s receiving, have you tried signing off at the end of a post with a call to action?

Try asking the reader for their opinion, for example,

~ “What’s been your experience of this topic?”
~ “Have you found yourself in this situation?”
~ “What would you do in this predicament?”

If you’ve not tried this, why not give it a go? ;-)

  57. 4Avatars Dennis Edell on May 1, 2008 3:53 pm

Excellent advice! I’ve noticed the most comments under 2 situations…

    1. A call to action as you put it.
    2. Posts that the majority are interested in anyway. A prime example of this was when I announced going Full Feed on my RSS.

Obviously #2 is what everyone wants with every post lol, but not always possible…..PROMOTION is the over all key.

My comments have quadrupled (or more) since setting up newer strategies…..now I just need to get monetization under control :-)

    Thanks, Dennis.

Yep #2 is also illustrated by this very post, although half the comments are my responses, it’s RR’s personal best (not counting the contest entries).

Your comments are of utmost importance, as it stems back to the original thought of this post…they keep the conversation flowing! :-)

Besides, yours mine or whoever’s it is…it ALL feeds the ever hungry search engines :-)

I will have to disagree with you about what you said. coComment is almost for flipset of people you mentioned. coComment doesn’t just give you comments, you have to be quite active. The reason I was so successful was because I got a beta invite, within the first few days I became #1, and stayed that way for 3-4 weeks. For the most part Robert Scoble was my competition, which was awesome, which was why I also successful However, a new guy, who help boost my stats, decided to overtake me. Overnight, he went from 100-200 comments to just under me. I had 700 at the time..

I tried asking those uestions and there has been minimal turn over

    Hey Ryan,

Well, my perusal of cocomment was v-e-r-y minimal - my mistake!

I guess the questions technique doesn’t work in every situation or for every blogger. Do let us know if you crack the alchemical formula for surefire comments!
