Blogging Widget Fun
Blogging Widget Fun
Although Reward Rebel has existed since last August, I’ve only applied myself to learning Wordpress (PHP), and how to use CSS in the last month or two, and as yet I have no idea how widgets and plug-ins are constructed.
But I’m satisfied with the progress that I’ve been making generally — each day empowers me a little more, and soon I’ll begin designing my own unique theme for Reward Rebel.

Dane Carlson’s widget, “How Much Is Your Blog Worth? is displayed on many blogs, resulting in people referring to him as ‘the most successful link baiter ever’!
According to the version of the widget displayed on Dane’s own website, his blog is worth $6,220,101.72.
I have no idea how this value is calculated, however, when we don’t understand something, we destroy it. Isn’t that the way of the world these days? Ooops, sorry wrong article, I’m not on a rant today!
The widget isn’t dynamic, and it isn’t going to update as your blog increases in value, so why not have some fun tweaking it to say whatever we fancy?
After playing around with a variety of exaggerated statements, I finally decided on the message you see above.
If you have one of these devices on your blog, why not play around with the wording and see what you can think of saying to make yours unique?

I think I’m taking a break from widgets at the moment…I just wrote about that in my last post. Sometimes you can get so many that it just clutters up your blog….

I like the way you’re thinking there! Makes it much more interesting to look at.

My blog worth $0.00, wow! that is surprising…not.

Curiously enough, it was when I was stripping widgets and unnecessary items from the sidebars (including a lot of same old, same old advertising) that it occurred to me it might be funnier to keep it, but make it say whatever I wanted ~ and maybe update it to suit my rebel mood swings;-D

Thank you… why not give it a try yourself? Go on…;-D

Aha, but only you knew that… until you announced it here;-D

Hello Reward Rebel,
I was tempted to place this particular widget a few weeks ago, but have not done so up to now. It is a good come-on and will make bloggers stop and take notice, and perhaps read the posts. Moreover, it would make them compare the stated worth of the site with their own to inspire them to be more creative about their respective sites. This is the effect on me whenever I see one.
But then, I came to the conclusion that my blog and its built-up friends are worth more to me than any monetary value that the widget can state. That being the case, as far as I am concerned, my site is priceless to me - same as those I visit regularly - like your site. –Durano, done!

I used to gaze enviously at the vast amounts people were declaring their blogs to be worth, but now… the more I learn, the more doubting I become about anything I see online. In cyberspace, everything can be manipulated, and I try to avoid it being me;-D

Layne,
The computation of a blog’s worth using that widget is also unclear to me. However, I can only speculate that the algorithm used by the creator is based on a combination of Page Rank, Link Popularity and Technorati Rank. It first fetches data from those data centers then calculates based on assigned weights. However, I don’t find it useful in any way. No widget can even come close to assessing my blog’s real worth in my view.

I think widgets are made with Java or Flash, not really sure though. I’ve been trying to learn CSS, but in the process I bought a book on PHP too. Although, the PHP book isn’t very good, at least to me. It has too many functions but not enough explanation of how to actually use them. Or, maybe I just didn’t go through it good enough
The two books I’m using are “Beginning PHP and MYSQL 5: From Novice to Professional” and “Beginning CSS Web Development: From Novice to Professional.”
I’m still on chapter 2 with the CSS one! Eep. And, the PHP one I just skimmed through.
Did you start learning PHP because of Wordpress? That’s why I bought the books, because I wanted to make my own Wordpress theme. But, Wordpress has some wierdo LOOP! Why do they have to have a LOOP?! The LOOP confuses me.

Thanks for enlightening me somewhat. I agree the widget serves no useful purpose, but I like to imagine the smile creeping across peoples’ faces when they realize it’s not what they thought it was;-D

I worked with Wordpress on an intuitive level for months, but eventually conceded that I needed to get familiar with PHP and CSS if I was ever gonna really be in charge of my blog! I’d only just learnt html when I started blogging… and Photoshop - it’s one long steep never ending learning curve. Oh yeah, of course, that’s called life, innit;-D
[Reply]
At the end of that learning curve you forget how hard it was though and it is worth it. You know what you want and you know how to do it and you don’t need a translator to talk to a developer to create it for you. Believe me sometimes it takes just as long explaining what you want as doing it yourself.

You’ve hit the nail on the head. I want to be able to choose to do the work myself or outsource, but either way be in a position to understand what’s going on and how to communicate about it. I appreciate the work and study is worthwhile, it’s just that sometimes… well, you know;-D
